Let's keep your lashes looking as good as they do on day one, for weeks!
Here's everything you need to know regarding taking care of your lash extensions.
These tips are given to all new clients after the end of their first appointment, including an aftercare card to keep with you!
Avoid steam, excessive pressure, and water around the lash line for the first 24 hours.
This one is a bit controversial in the lash industry: not getting your lashes wet within the first 24 hours.
One tech can tell you it's fine to get your lashes wet right away and another could tell you not to get them wet within 48 hours.
Talk about confusing!
Here's the truth...
Getting your lashes wet within 24 hours of your appointment is not going to cause massive premature shedding (extensions shedding without the natural lash attached).
I have actually washed my own client's lashes after we were done her fill. and 3 weeks later, her retention was the same as it usually is (which is amazing btw)!

So, why do I say to avoid getting the lashes wet for the first 24 hours?
While you won't have a crazy amount of fallout, the bond between the extension and the natural lash can weaken, making it more brittle and less resistant.
At Tashline Lashes, your lashes are washed before the application process starts, so you don't need to worry about washing them right away anyways.
I always tell my clients that if you need to shower within the first 24 hours, that's ok! Just try not to get the lashes wet. No, you do not need to wear goggles in the shower.
Avoid high temperatures around the lashes.
Important: your lash extensions are flammable. They will singe if they come into close contact with heat. Things like lighter flames, bonfires, that initial heat blast that comes from the oven after opening the door, or stove tops, can cause the tips of the lashes to become blunt and bent and the extensions can lose their curl.

This will not only completely change the look of your set, but it will also snag on your spooly when you try to brush them.
Have a look: the singed lashes look longer because they have lost their curl and the tips are no longer neat and 90 degrees.
Wash your lashes 1-2 times a day.
Using an extension-safe cleanser, lash extensions need to be washed at least once a day to remove any dust, dirt, dead skin cells, makeup, and other debris that can build up on the lash line.
Not only will this keep your lashes looking and feeling clean, contributing to overall eye health, it will also drastically improve your retention!
Picture this: you get your full set of extensions, you go home and for 3 weeks you're doing your makeup, using oily products around your eyes, sweating, etc, and you're not washing your lashes.
When you come in for your fill, the adhesive is going to stick to allllll of that other debris rather than your natural lashes, leading to premature fallout.
If you've had perfect retention after a full set and its gotten worse for your fills, this could be why!
I tell my clients to make sure they're cleansing their lashes at least once a day, but if their doing their makeup, going to the gym, and/or have oily-skin, to aim for washing them twice a day to keep those lashes nice and clean!
When to wash your lashes:
after crying
swimming
after removing makeup or washing face
after waking up or before going to bed
after the gym and/or sweating
Avoid oil-based makeup and facial products.
While ethyl-cyanoacrylate is oil-resistant, oils can still impact your retention.
This is most noticeable when the lashes are not being washed at home. Oily products being used around the eyes may accumulate on the lash line, creating a barrier on the natural lashes that the adhesive is going to attach to.
This will lead to extensions shedding without the natural lash attached, which means poor retention.
If you are going to be using any serums, makeup, moisturizers, etc avoid applying it around your lash line and be sure to be washing those lashes daily!
Avoid rubbing, picking, and pulling at your lashes.
DUH, right?
Excessive pressures like rubbing and pulling on your lashes can either pop the extension off of your natural lash (affecting retention) or, the more-likely case, rip out your natural lash.
Not only will this impact how long your extensions are lasting you, but it will also affect the growth of your natural lashes, leading to temporary (or permanent) lash damage.
And let me just say, a lash tech knows when you've been picking at your lashes!
Avoid sleeping on your stomach/ side.
I know, I know. I struggle with this one too.
It's also out of your control if you fall asleep on your back and turn onto your side while you're sleeping.
However, for the same reasons as why you shouldn't pick and pull at your lashes, you should also be trying to sleep on your back to avoid the lashes from rubbing against your pillow.
If you're noticing a difference on one eye vs the other when it comes to retention, specifically in the outer corner, it could be due to sleeping on that side.
It may be a good idea to invest in a dome sleeping mask.
Fills and removals
If you're wanting to stick with lash extensions, fills are recommended every 2-3 weeks to maintain their overall look and weight-distribution on your natural lashes.
At your fills, your tech will remove any outgrown lashes (our lashes are continuously growing and shedding. Click here to read more about your lash growth cycle) and attach new extensions closer to the base of the natural lashes.
If you're planning on getting your lashes done for a vacation, event, or decide you're just wanting to take a break (first of all, I'll miss you), I always recommend to book a removal around the 4 week mark rather than just letting the extensions shed on their own.
This is because as the natural lashes grow, the extensions get further and further from the lash line. The set won't look as seamless, especially as they shed, and they may snag on your spooly a little. You may feel more inclined to pick at them due to their annoyance.
And aftercare 101 says, what?
Say it with me...
Do not pick or pull at your lashes!
By following your aftercare, you're guaranteed beautiful, long-lasting extensions that are comfortable and sustainable.
